Things you’ll do on the Kololo
Conservation Course
This experience has similarities to the Diepkloof Bush Skills Course but focusses more on the broader conservation and ecological aspects of the African Wilderness and rather less on things like animal behaviour and guiding. It is also intended to allow people to give back to nature by doing a little bit of practical, hands-on work. Practical tasks are geared to the wishes of the group and are light, most certainly not back-breaking, although you might occasionally break into a sweat!
You will spend most of the cooler hours of the day out in the bush, with theory being taught back at camp in the afternoons (in between lounging round the pool or snoozing in a hammock!). You will contribute to erosion control and rehabilitation projects and will also assist with a bush thinning project. The theory and practical effects of these projects are dovetailed throughout the course. A certificate will prove that you have “been there and done that”!
You will learn about, and assist with collecting data from the field, for a few small research projects. There are also game counts to be done including a 24 hour count at a waterhole.
Don’t worry - it is not all hard work, we also have loads of fun!! Just wait for the sandy riverbed volleyball…it makes the beach version of the game look tame!
You will go on daily game drives and walks looking for the awesome array of wildlife that is to be found in the area. As with the Ranger course, you will also spend at least one night sleeping out in the bush under the African sky and do the walking Safari to Parrot Tree Tent camp. The evenings are spent around the camp fire with plenty to talk about (and usually some gentle snoring!!)
This experience is for those on a quest for an up-close and personal interaction with the Wilderness. It is fairly hands-on and at the end of it, richly rewarding. It is great to know that you have had the privilege of leaving a small positive impact on a place that has given you such a life-changing experience.
